L'Air National Guard est administrée par le National Guard Bureau,
qui dépend à la fois de l'Army et de l'Air Force, au Pentagone,
à Washington D.C.
L'Air National Guard a une double mission , à la fois fédérale et étatique.
La mission fédérale de l'Air National Guard consiste a maintenir des unités
bien entrainées et bien equipées disponibles pour une mobilisation immédiate en temps de guerre
et prêtes a fournir de l'assistance en cas d'urgence nationale (catastrophes naturelles, désordres civils).
En temps de paix, les unités prêtes au combat et celles de support sont assignées
aux principaux commandements de l'Air Force pour mener des missions d'entraînement.
L'Air National Guard fournit la moitié du transport tactique de l'Air Force,
des fonctions de communication, des évacuations médicales et du ravitaillement en vol.
De plus, l'Air National Guard assume la totale responsabilité de la défense aérienne
de l'ensemble du territoire des Etats-Unis d'Amérique.
Mission étatique :
Lorsque les unités de l'ANG ne sont pas mobilisées sous contrôole fédéral,
elles dépendent du gouverneur de leur état ou territoire (Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands) respectif,
ou du Général commandant la National Guard du District of Columbia.
Sous la loi étatique, l'Air National Guard a mission de sécurité publique comme de support aeroporte anti-incendie,
des opérations de recherche et secours ou d'interventions de lutte contre les stupéfiants et leur trafic.
